Japanese Whisky: precision, balance and elegance

The production of Japanese whisky began in the late 19th century, around 1870, through small-scale, artisanal methods. But it wasn’t until 1924 that Japan's first official whisky distillery, Yamazaki, was founded. Key figures like Shinjiro Torii and Masataka Taketsuru shaped the early days of Japanese whisky. Torii, a pharmacist considered the "father of Japanese whisky", founded Kotobukiya, which would later become the famous Suntory. He hired Taketsuru, a chemist trained in the art of Scotch whisky.

In 1934, Taketsuru left Torii to create his own company, Dainipponkaju, which later evolved into the renowned Nikka distillery.

In 1929, the first truly Japanese whisky was released under the Suntory label, called Shirofuda. It was a smoky malt whisky that didn’t appeal to the Japanese palate. However, in 1937, Suntory’s iconic Kakubin - the square bottle - introduced a milder, less peaty whisky that became a national favorite.

Japanese whisky stands out for its unique aging process using Japanese mizunara oak barrels, alongside European oak (typically seasoned with sherry) and American oak (new or ex-bourbon). Mizunara wood adds rare and distinctive aromatic notes to the spirit.

While blended whiskies dominate consumption in Japan, single malts are increasingly appreciated both locally and globally.

Suntory and Nikka remain Japan’s whisky giants, but a growing number of craft distilleries are gaining international attention. Japanese whiskies are known for their balance, elegance, and unforgettable character - a benchmark on the world whisky stage.

One of the most sought-after Japanese whiskies is Yamazaki 12 Year Old.
